How Golf taught me how to be a better Jew

Out on the Golf Course with an accomplished businessman this week, I swung hard on my driver. Though it turned out to be a good shot thankfully, my friend put his arm on my shoulder and said: 'Rabbi, it's not how hard you hit that matters, it's how smart'.

His words hit me hard. Suddenly it dawned upon me why I tire after just 6 holes. 'If you just use the correct technique, it'll work every time'. Despite my protests that logic is on my side, he stood firm in his position: 'it doesn't need to make sense. Just follow the rules of the swing and you'll be amazed at the results!'

Then and there, I stopped him and remarked that it's interesting that the same principle rings true with our Spirituality and inner peace. Though it sometimes defies logic, our relationship with Hashem is the key to inner peace and true happiness, 'as long as you follow the rules, you'll be amazed at the results'.

'Don't move your wrists; it's all in the shoulders.' 'Don't lift your head until you hear the ball land in the cup.' 'Don't hit the ball, swing right through the ball.' These rules and techniques will deliver a perfect shot.

Light Shabbat Candles, Give Tzedaka, Lay Tefillin, have an attitude of Gratitude to G-d. These are the rules and techniques that deliver a happier and more meaningful life!

How do I know? Try it. It works every time!

When the going gets tough, the Fed Shuts down?!

intellect-revelation.jpgAfter the President of Israel personally asked them to reconsider, the Council of Europe agreed yesterday not to outlaw male circumcision in their continent! Phew! Hard to believe that such a debate could go on in this day and age? Yes, it's true, America is still eons ahead of the rest of the world in terms of religious freedoms, thank G-d for this great land!

But seriously, why do we perform a Bris on tiny baby? Wouldn't it be more meaningful to allow our kids to choose to connect to G-d when they're a little older instead of forcing it upon them at such an age?!

Ishmael, son of Abraham had his bris at 13 years old while Isaac at eight days. Ishmael emphatically declared his faith superior precisely for this reason! He argued that he chose G-d, while Isaac mearly went along with something done unto him.

Yet, G-d chose Isaac to be the father of his chosen people. It was because of his Bris- his  G-dly covenant, made way before he could understand what's flying.

You see, once Ishmael chose to have a relationship with G-d, his commitment to G-d was restricted to that precedent- to when things make sense, it's when he's a mature, thinking adult and can comprehend it fully.

But to be a Jew is to be committed to Hashem even when things dont make sense at all, when it is completely obscure and unclear to us. Like Isaac's bris defied logic and choice, our connection to G-d prevails even when things make no sense at all!

When the Federal Budget numbers simply don't add up, the United States of America shut down. But, we have a Bris at 8 days old,  remain devoted to G-d even when things don't add up at all.

I have yet to find a Holocaust survivor who is apathetic to G-d. They either embrace G-d or arevery angry with Him, But I have never found a Survivor who is indifferent to G-d.

Though the Holocaust makes no sense and defies logic, a Jew remains a Jew always. And this is the first message we teach our children as they enter the world. By giving them a bris at 8 days old, before they can logically understand G-d, we tell them that a Jew is always a Jew, no matter what!

If G-d is so good, then whyis it so bad?!

noach.jpg Why did Noah's Ark fare better than the Titanic?!

'If G-d is perfect, why would create such an imperfect world? Obviously, he isn't!', concluded an intellectual who engaged me in debate this week.

As we read the story of creation followed immediately by murder, robbery and the great flood of Noah, the question begs to be asked.

The answer lies in a redundant word we recite in the Kiddush: 'G-d rested on the seventh day from all that he created to do'. What is the meaning of the suffix 'to do'?

Our sages explain that herein lies the purpose of creation: G-d deliberatelycreated an imperfect and incomplete world, to that you and I should be able to use our judgment to perfect and complete his work and thus become partners in creation! As He ceased creating, He recognized all that was still left 'to do'.

In other words: Man was created imperfect in order to perfect this world.

Remember: Noah's Ark was built by amateurs'; the Titanic was built by experts! Because you don't need to be perfect in order to perfect the world!

Amazingly,  Robert Ballard, the man who discovered the Titanic underwater, is conviced that he has found the remnants of Noah's Ark intact on Mount Ararat! on the same mountain that the Torah tells it rested on after the Great Flood. Read the fascinating story by clicking here

We were placed in this world not as tourists, but as residents. We're here to fix the place up, not just to admire it's beauty!

The journey to build our new Shul too, might not have been perfect, but it's the efforts of hard working people doing their best, that makes all the difference!

What have you done today that will change the world?

Wishing you a Shabbat of Perfection,

Rabbi Dovid and Chana Vigler
