This you call a roof?!

Whilst we just spent tens of thousands of dollars on the stunning new roof tiles of our Shul, millions of Jews around the world are eating in flimsy Sukkahs for eight days!

A sukkah's roof must be made of foliage, disconnected from the ground. Not exactly what you might call secure. But that's exactly why we do it!

Instead of resting upon our laurels and convincing ourselves that everything in our lives is under our personal control, the humble Sukkah reminds us that what separates us from the elements is just a thin film of foliage.

Just like G-d shielded our ancestors for 40 years as they wandered in the desert, the Sukkah reminds us that He does the same to us every single day!

As secure as we might feel, we are powerless to a hurricane in NJ or New Orleans, an earthquake in California or a financial meltdown in Palm Beach, FL. A tiny growth inside someone's body, sudden changes in our memory retention or the happiness in our relationships are ultimately in the hands of G-d who loves and cares for us.

I found great meaning in our New Shul's Mango Salsa Roof being  placed during Sukkos, because whenever I see that striking color above us, I hope to remember that G-d is always watching over us!

The Sukkah's protection is upon all who enter it; G-d's protection is upon all who let him in!

Wishing you a very joyous  Simchat Torah Holiday,
