The face of a hero; the face of a coward:
Did you know that a bully is the first to cry when confronted by others? It’s hard to believe because he looks so tough, but I got to see it first hand from a Neo-Nazi in PGA National this week.
Leaving the bank a few days ago, I was stopped by a woman in the community who was excited about our new Shul being built at that shopping center. As we chatted we heard shouts, “Go back to Brooklyn where you belong!” Turning around, I saw a potbellied man in shorts and a t-shirt, somewhere about his sixties, ride away still cursing and hurling expletives. I immediately called out with conviction, “You’re a coward!” To which he responded with a blood chilling call: “If only Hitler would have gassed all you filthy Jews in the gas chambers! I’m sorry he didn’t finish the job!”
Getting into my car, I followed the man as he parked his bicycle and entered a restaurant as if nothing had happened. As he emerged I snapped a picture of him with my phone (pictured below). “Get out of the car”, he screamed. Looking him straight in the eye I said, “You’re a coward! And if you aren’t, then you won’t be afraid to wait for the cops, they’ll be here any minute now.” He hopped back on his bike and fled for his life like a cockroach when the lights are turned on. As I continued to follow him, he jumped into the bushes by the lake, just moments before the police arrived. A full police report was filed and charges will be pressed. But we and the PBG Police Dept. need your help in identifying the coward. Scroll down for his photo, share this email with your friends and together we'll nail him!
This man had the audacity to invoke the murders of millions of men, women and children in Auschwitz. My grandparents were there and miraculously survived to bear children, grandchildren and now great-grandchildren! My dear friend Elliott Fixler’s grandfather, Meyer Berger, was not so lucky. His grandfather stood patiently in line at Auschwitz facing death with dignity, but Elliot himself, an infant at the time, survived miraculously.
Because their lives and the lives of so many millions of others were so tragically wasted, we have a duty and obligation to make our lives worth double and triple.
Look deeply into the eyes of the men pictured in this photo of Meyer Berger in the receiving line of Auschwitz. I wonder what you see..........?
To me, I see the faces of heroes. Faces of people who truly lived for their faith so much so that they were willing to die for their faith.
It is imperative on us that when confronted with anti-Semitism we do not cower. When we stand tall, their empty threats and malicious curses quickly dissipate as they flee for their lives.
Herein lying the difference between a hero and a coward. A coward flees when confronted over his beliefs; a hero will even die for his beliefs.
Wishing you a Shabbat Shalom
